By Melanie Ball, Euroa, Vic.

Melanie decorates op shopped hats with one-off appliqué designs and then sells them at her local country markets.

Lots of people wear hats these days, whether as a fashion statement or just for protection, but even after a couple of years of decorating second-hand hats, I’m still surprised by who buys them – and who doesn’t. Sometimes I can pick them, but often not. Craft market selling has taught me that families with young children are not my market, although I have appliquéd hats for grandchildren, commissioned by fun-loving more adventurous grandparents.
