One week ago we could not have imagined the swift learning curve we were about to embark on with our small herd of Galloway cows. After 21 years of breeding, we have wound right down and this was to be our last calving season, with only two cows in calf. But tragedy struck quickly, requiring us to deal with the heartbreak and guilt of the loss of a healthy eight-year-old cow who was to enjoy retirement as a lawn mower. We also needed to respond to an emergency situation, saving and hand feeding an orphan heifer calf – a situation we had only experienced once, 11 years ago, and which had been unsuccessful.
