It can be highly satisfying giving commercial layers a second chance at life but it’s important to meet their specific needs.

You may occasionally see an advertisement online or in the classifieds of your local paper offering layer hens for around $10. With the red-plumaged point-of-lay pullets selling for $24-plus, this seems a real bargain. But for the price to be so low, the birds for sale must have completed their commercial tenure and are being culled because persistency and uniformity of egg size and shell strength are now reducing.
